At Craft Central we are delighted that the Crafts Council has selected Emily Jo Gibbs to exhibit at this year’s Collect Open. Collect 18 The International Art Fair for Contemporary Objects, will be held at the Saatchi Gallery 22-25 February.  Emily has a long association with Craft Central and we have watched her develop her practice.  Some makers find a niche and stick with it. Not so Emily. Some twenty years ago she started her fashion accessories business producing award-winning evening handbags. Her exquisite horse chestnut bag is now in the permanent collection of the V&A. After an award from Craft Central in 2005 Emily changed direction to producing all kinds of vessels made of silver, silks and willow and evocative of silver birches, willow baskets, plants and nests. More recently she took a new direction into producing stitched commissioned portraits, often of children. Emily hand stitches layers of silk organza on to linen working from photographs and from life. At Collect she will be exhibiting seven portraits of contemporary makers captured through the tools they use.

You can see Emily highlighted by the Crafts Council as well here.
