Discover the work of emerging furniture and product designers at The CASS summer BA Show.

Great to see such a high quality, well equipped course thriving in the heart of London. It's almost like walking into a commercial showroom with the modernity of the designs and the quality of construction. Pieces are slick, compact and sometimes multi-functional, utilitarian whilst being ascetically pleasing. A great deal of thought and planning has gone into each design.

Amongst many excellent pieces of work, see Scott Kelly’s coffee table and book shelf.  Scott sandblasts Douglas Fir, removing the softer wood  formed in the annual growing season, leaving the late season harder wood. This creates grooves and pieces can be slotted together to make  interesting and tactile furniture.

Ella Merriman is a second year student with a project,'Not Paper Bags'. She has been inspired by the way paper bags are creased to fold out for use. Her chosen material is laminated wax paper and linen scrim  creating a strong and showerproof material with a paper-like quality. When not in use, the bag folds up. It will withstand several uses but when worn out, the straps and eyelets can be detached and used with a new bag. It’s all been very well thought through, functional and environmentally considerate.

The show is on until the 8th of July on the 5th floor of 59–63 Whitechapel High Street London E1 7PF, Nearer tube Aldgate East
