BIOGRAPHY

Go back to the main page

Dovetailed is an African wax print fabric shop! They also sell sewing patterns and haberdasheries. Here you will find a range of African wax print fabrics and supplies.

Adaku Parker is a barrister turned designer. Whilst on maternity leave with her second child, she took several evening classes in clothes making, tailoring, African fashion and pattern cutting and it grew from there. To use a well-coined phrase, 'it was love at first stitch'. To start with, she made a simple tote bag (just for fun) and the feedback/comments from people were great! She has sewn every day since learning and has made handbags, clothes and accessories.

Sold by the yard and by the Fat Quarter

'African print’ is used to identify a category of textiles using 100% cotton fabric in vibrant colours, which are printed by machine using wax resins and dyes so that they have a batik-like effect on both sides of the fabric.

Sold by the Yard

£5, £7.50 or £10 per yard
The method is called wax-resist dying because the wax ‘resists’ the dye from penetrating the entire cloth, which is how patterns are made. It also goes by the names of super wax, java, and Ankara, with ‘wax’ named fabrics having a somewhat glossy, stiff, waxy feeling surface even though they are roller printed.

£5, £7.50 or £10 per yard
