Podcasts are everywhere nowadays – even more at present! A podcast is like listening to a radio show, where it’s just you and the people on the podcast in the room. The great thing about them is that you can listen to them whenever you want and you don’t need to watch anything.
Craft Central thrilled to be able to support the local community and the healthcare professionals

To support the efforts against Covid-19 and help the NHS, Craft Central has been given the opportunity to offer a private space to two local professionals who are using several 3D printers in order to produce protective face shields for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who lack personal protective equipment.

Craft Central has put together some useful information, links and promotions that aim to help makers and the self-employed through these testing times of shutdown and isolation. Like all other venues, we have to postpone all events and workshops for the time being. Our onsite office is also closed. Craft Central staff will be working romotely until further notice.

Once upon a time…St Mary’s RC Primary School in Chiswick was audited by the Mayor’s Office among the 50 most polluted schools in London. A recent survey by the Times put it on top of the list of the most polluted schools in the whole of Hounslow. In 2018 a group of parents set out to change all that and turn it into one of the greenest by building a green infrastructure in St Mary’s playground along the brick wall that separates the school to the A4 (with a flow of at least 80,000 vehicles a day).
The Boat Builders – a new body of work by Emily Jo Gibbs for solo exhibition in the spring

Craft Central is very pleased to announce that Emily Jo Gibbs has made a new series of portraits The Boat Builders, documenting Foreman and their Apprentices working at Berthon Boatyard in Lymington. Highlighting the Value of Making and the importance of skilled labour. A celebration of people who prefer a hands-on approach, whose knowledge and skill is gained through the doing, learnt through making. This project is being supported by Arts Council England.

First stop is visiting the silk tribes in Fakirpur, roughly 8 hours south of Kolkata. In 2017 Erna Janine was the participant in the DISC The Art program "the Never Ending Thread" there, a collaborative textile art project created over three months traveling through rural east India along with a group of ten international artists. Erna Janine has been using the forest silk from the tribal areas near Fakirpur in her weaving pieces ever since.

As a new mum she took a few textile and sewing evening classes while on maternity leave and her bespoke creations, such as bags and clothes, were in demand.

This will finance a trip to Japan in spring 2020. She will undertake a ten-day course in katazome (traditional resist printing and dyeing using stencils, rice paste and indigo) and spend some further days visiting Japanese katazome practitioners including traditional masters and contemporary makers extending traditional practice.

Craft Central's London Craft Week 2020 Programme Announced

Join Craft Central for a celebration of their female makers. Textile artist Emily Jo Gibbs, who currently appears in the V&A Bags Exhibition, will be giving a talk on The Value of Making, an ongoing project celebrating makers in stitch. Emily will also be running a hand-stitched silk organza appliqué workshop where you can learn her technique.
