Emma Jeffs set up her design studio in 2000 under the name surfacematerialdesign.
Emma is both a designer of pattern and a specialist of materials. She has won many awards for her innovative use of materials and processes. These include the prestigious UK government NESTA fellowship award in 2004 to research some of her ideas and techniques within industry.
The relationship of pattern, surface interest and material is at the forefront of her designs. Materials explored include plastic, glass, paper and fabric, which are combined with a myriad of techniques. Her designs demonstrate her enthusiasm and imagination of materials, process and pattern. Final products have included window screens, room dividers, lampshades, fashion and interior accessories.
Emma has created site specific work for domestic and commercial spaces. She has exhibited widely through galleries in Britain and worldwide. Alongside her commissioned work the surfacematerialdesign studio produces a range of manufactured products that encompass surface pattern, material and function. Her Adhesive film for windows is sold throughout the UK, Europe and the US.
