Craft Central

Sumi Perera's artist books invariably exploit her background as a doctor, scientist and artist, working in the East (Sri Lanka, her native country), and the West (the United Kingdom, her adoptive country). Mixed media assemblage techniques combining stitch, incision and traditional forms of printmaking are digitally manipulated to transform unique artwork into democratic multiples. Slight variations on the theme are used to generate 'unique multiples', whilst blurring boundaries between the artist/artisan, orient/occident and the past and present. The reader is often invited to engage with the book, by adding, subtracting, changing the numbering of the pages, thereby sharing the editorial control of the artwork.
