Nelia de Sousa has been designing and making Jewellery for the last 11 year. The first 9 years for an established London based jewellery Design Company, before establishing Square Circles 3 years ago with her husband Dyfed Price. Born in Madeira, Portugal, Nelia moved to London when she was 13 years old, and studied at Central St Martins and Brunel University.
Nelia’s first collection for Square Circles ‘Doilies’ are greatly influenced by her Portuguese heritage, her detailed designs marrying the tradition of embroidery with simple modern aesthetics, resulting in individual, elegant and timeless pieces.
Working from her south London studio, Nelia’s design process involves sketch books, design drawings and creating at the bench. Nelia enjoys mixing different materials and techniques to interpret her drawings, when creating a new collection or pieces.
Her other collection shows the talent of this young designer, following the huge success of her first sole collections, ‘Doilies’, Pure and simple’ and ‘Blossom’, at IJL ‘05, she again has been able to create an outstanding new collection ‘Smarties’ in 2006 and ‘Cameos’ in 2007
The quality of her work was awarded last year at International jewellery London, she was awarded ‘Best small Stand 2006’ from a panel of esteemed judges. The Items is on display here is only a taste of what is available from the talented designer.
