Designer-Maker Maryja Symone Johnson creates limited collections of handmade lighting, using her embroidered textiles and metals. Her attention to detail of attachment (in some pieces) using rivets and stitch are what makes her lights unusual, creating a unique style of lighting.
With the materials used; steel, silk and iron wire, Maryja works with various techniques such as decorative brazing and wire stitching, as interesting ways to combine her mediums.
She has previously exhibited at the British Craft Trade Fair in London, where she was given a Ted Mahoney award, being highly commended for the Award for Excellence.
In August 2009, Maryja had her first solo exhibition of her new collection. She makes pendants, wall and floor lights and table lamps. She set up her textiles studio and metal workshop in London, in December ’08 and is currently designing other interior products such as candleholders and cushions, which will be available to view in Spring 2010.
The future plan for Rivets n Stitch is to design and make interior products for bars and restaurants. Maryja is also available for private commissions.
