Louise Miller uses cutting techniques to create intricate patterns that are incorporated into jewellery. She investigates how cutting into a surface can create ornament and how this surface can be developed into a structure, where the boundaries between two-dimensional and three dimensional blur.
Inspiration for surface designs ranges from the rich ornament found in Islamic lands, through to Art Noveau tiles, Japanese origami and Mexican paper-cutting. Non-precious materials such as acrylic, resin and paper are combined with silver and 18ct gold. Some pieces, when not being worn, can be housed in wall-mounted capsules to become part of a larger, decorative picture. This not only solves the problem of storing unworn jewellery but also gives the piece a dual function.
Louise graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2005 and shortly after, established her studio in Hackney, East London. Since then she has exhibited throughout the UK, including shows at Collect and Origin.
Work may be commissioned and is also available at selected retail outlets.
