Batt's work can be applied to large scale architectural interior/exterior installations, smaller wall/furniture panels, or fine art vessels and sculptures as she explores the endless possibilities glass offers a maker. Lucy works mostly to commission on bespoke projects but also creates fine art work for exhibition.
Her work spans a variety of techniques, including kiln forming, sandblasting/acid etching, screen printing and contemporary leaded work. The driving force of Batt's work is her fascination with the colours and forms of nature, seen in fine detail.
There are two recognisable styles that form the signature of Lucy's work. The first is the use of abstracted natural imagery, often taken from macro photography, sandblasted and etched onto different glass surfaces, celebrating the subtlety of natures lines juxtaposed with the seductively glossy surface the glass provides. The second is a bold exploration of colour and deeply abstracted forms inspired by nature, created by calculated layering of glass to create kiln formed vessels and panels.
In her work, Lucy aims to pick up on subtle lines in nature that are often overlooked, and relish in them. When working on commission this approach to her work allows her to keep a stylistic continuity to her work at the same time as designing the commissioned piece on a subject relevant to/chosen by the commissioner. Embracing the qualities of the glass forms the final process of her work, as she strives to find a balance between conveying her subject matter and allowing the qualities of the glass itself to be enjoyed.
