Established jeweller Kelvin J Birk has developed an intriguing new body of experimental jewellery and objects. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds and other precious stones have been smashed and then reconstructed on precious metal structures.Â
Some of the results are carefully planned and designed and others evolve naturally from the intrinsic qualities of the material. Following personal life experiences Kelvin comments “There is always destruction and loss but out of that come new things and a new order. he says. His jewellery illustrates this theme of chaos and re-creation.
Kelvin J Birk has been living and working in London for the last 12 years as a self-employed jeweller and silversmith, during which time he has established an international market for his high quality, innovative, contemporary jewellery, silverware and objects. Birk trained as a jeweller and silversmith at the Bauhaus-influenced Berufsfachschule for Glass & Jewellery in Germany and at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art in London.
Kelvin J. Birk was selected for the Clerkenwell Green Association’s Creative 8 Award. As part of this award a solo-exhibition was held at Clerkenwell Green Association in Jan 2007.Â
