Kate makes elegant raku and stoneware sculptural ceramics in a range of subtle crackles and smoky finishes.
The passage of time and the ability of certain objects to connect us with our past are both sources of inspiration for her ceramics.
Raku fired boxes, vessels and containers with permanently bound lids are conceived as small scale installations. Wood, slate and precious metal gilding are all used to create a sense of balance and harmony with the ceramics.
Recent work includes a series of jugs that are tilted or upright, evoking a sense of movement and interplay. Positioned together in their family groups, they appear to capture fleeting moments of conversations and human connections.
Kate’s ceramics have been exhibited nationally and internationally since 1997.
Her major 2008 exhibition ‘Juxtapositions’ at Blackwell, The Arts and Crafts House in Cumbria, saw a new range of work incorporating the use of gilding with a series of raku jugs and collaborative pieces made with the silversmith Mizuho Koizumi.
Kate’s ceramics launched the Design and Decoration Department in Harrods in 1999. She has completed commissions for collections, installations and hotels, including British Airways, The British Embassy in St. Petersburg, Craftspace and Cowley Manor. Her sycamore boxed set of 13 raku vessels is part of the permanent collection at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
Kate’s ceramics have been featured in a number of books and films and she runs one-to-one master classes and short courses from her studio in Kent.
