‘Delightful creations from a talented newcomer.’

This exhibition provides the first unveiling of beautiful new embroidered textiles that make a fascinating study on domestic rituals, narratives and home-crafts from the past.

Maxine Sutton began her study at the Geffrye Museum in East London where the archives of furniture and home paraphernalia provided plenty of starting points for contemporary reflection.  Sutton has been inspired by tea drinking rituals, victorian patchwork and embroidered objects, home manuals and ‘how to’ books, doilies, dainties, whimsies and fancy work.  The everyday domesticity of the past is brought into new light with this surreal and irreverent look back at generations past and their homemaking activities.

Sutton’s contemporary collection of wall pieces and one off homewares have a 1930’s inspired colour palette and new combinations of appliqué, hand and machine embroidery and screen printing.  Her work offers a fresh twist on traditional techniques and this exhibition is the first chance to see this new body of work highlighting Sutton’s unique skills and enthusiasm for everyday oddities and all things stitched.
