Dynasty, the unique jewelry brand, was conceived in July this year by Danish creative, Kamilla Thorsen. Having lived in England since 2000, the 30-year-old is no beginner when creating and working with accessories. Kamilla started designing one-off pieces whilst still in Denmark, something she says stemmed from childhood, continuing the designs after completing a degree in fashion textiles. Kamilla soon launched her own distinctive collections, creating the asymmetric look, which includes a long earring in one ear, whilst the other has a shorter hoop. Her work caught the attentions of Cate Blanchett, Zoe Ball and Sara Cox, with pieces receiving press coverage in the Guardian Weekend and the Sunday Telegraph.
Based in London, Kamilla experiments with precious and non-precious elements using engraved acrylic, wood, faux ivory and pearl, demanding beautiful shapes with added imagery to bring the best out of the materials. Playing with the reflections of light, and the contrast between matt and shiny, she captures the unique glowing qualities of the acrylic, simulating a certain sumptuousness. Kamilla’s Scandinavian roots are apparent in the aesthetics of pure lines and functionalism, although each hand-made piece has a traditionally artful yet modern feel to it.
The Dynasty collection for A/W ‘08 was born through inspiration from the recent Anthony Gormley exhibition shown at The Hayward. Precious pieces are created out of non-precious materials, inlayed with sophisticated ingredients and engraved with a personalised pattern born from diamond cuts, all on a palette of industrial grays, black, white and splashes of purple and blue.
