Who is Christine Kaltoft?
Christine is a designer and maker of graphic contemporary jewellery.
What is the inspiration behind your work?
I'm inspired by the energetic essence of encounters, movements and sounds. I capture my fleeting feelings as quick sketches, and then
working with these in mind I shape precious metal wires to convey a sense of my remembered experiences. I see my jewellery as wearable
sketches, doodles, and even scribbles. As a friend commented 'there's something very decadent about a doodle in gold!'
What is your favourite material:
I love using wire: it's great to draw with, and I can express myself quickly by twisting, soldering, and forging it. I keep a whole palette
of different wires. Wire is light, convenient, and there's very little wastage.
Why am I the one to watch?
I only graduated a couple of years ago and my work is constantly evolving. I hand-made each piece so they're all different, and if you
don't watch you might miss something!
The collection I will be exhibiting at Brilliance...
... includes my popular collection inspired by sketches of birds, and new work based on sounds, ranging from music to the cacophony of city
streets.
What does the future hold?
I've got a busy year ahead because I've been selected for several major shows. It's great because I feel I've been given the green light to go
ahead and create - so I'm planning to have fun!
