I regard ceramic as a relevant and contemporary expressive medium.
I develop work in may ways, primarily in ‘finding through making’ with form, surface and texture together with techniques such as photography, printmaking and collage/assemblage.
Always within my work, the sense of place and recording of environment is key – through drawing, collage and photography I document and subsequently sift through a variety of collected information that informs my work. Printing directly onto surfaces, imprinting and layering is integral to the tension and harmony of the work as it aims to suggest and evoke the explored themes whilst not referring with literal interpretation.
In my most recent work I have developed this agenda to question and consider the context and/or themes for the work in a variety of situations, namely: installation/intervention, object and artefact, architectural structure or feature. This had led me to investigate the use of materials such as clay, plaster, wood, paper and concrete in combination. Using architectural construction materials and processes emphasises the relationship to environment and it’s subsequent situation in context. The notion of location, placement and presence is key.
My work is both functional and decorative, it provokes and questions but above all is rooted in the exploration of material; it’s limitation and potential. I seek to challenge and innovate as a maker and designer.
