Who is An Alleweireldt/Oxx ?
An Alleweireldt/Oxx designs and makes contemporary jewellery on comission or for exhibitions.
What is the inspiration behind your work?
As a designer, I have always been drawn to turning 2D material into 3D objects. I use images, drawings or flat materials as building blocks, piecing them together to reach a 3D reality.
My favourite material is..
Because "precious" is traditionally equated to "rare", we tend to underestimate the beauty of outwardly humble or common objects and materials.
The structure, shape and colour of materials like vinyl records, cord, seeds from the rainforest but also 18ct gold and silver fascinate me endlessly.
Why am I the one to watch...
I design pieces so that each one would reach the point of exact balance between introduction and recognition. What I have in mind is a subtle confrontation of past and new shapes and forms in order to cast a new light on every dimension of the object’s life and meaning, revealing its depth and full beauty.
Details about the collections you will be exhibiting at Brilliance…
For this exhibition I have mainly focussed on string. It is such a universal, daily and versatile material, yet completely underrated for its possibility to create a shape or focus within an object. In combination with other found materials I created shapes with this material that are the centre of attention of each object.
What does the future hold?
With a background of both product and jewellery design my aim has always been to make commercial collections as well as unique pieces. They both hold a challenge for me in their own specific way.
This year a new collection will be launched at the Southbank Centre and more items will be for sale through my website.
